Manchester United is set to commence discussions about extending manager Erik ten Hag’s contract, with talks already initiated, according to sources.
Ten Hag, who took charge in 2022, guided the team to a third-place finish in the Premier League and secured the Carabao Cup in his debut season. Despite facing challenges in the current campaign, including off-field issues and four defeats, United recently responded with consecutive wins, defeating Crystal Palace 3-0.
Although Ten Hag’s existing contract runs until June 2025, with an option for a one-year extension, talks about renewal were scheduled around 18 months into the initial agreement. The club’s leadership, including Chief Executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough, express satisfaction with Ten Hag’s performance and are eager to continue their collaboration.
The ongoing uncertainty over the club’s ownership, marked by the Glazer family exploring strategic alternatives, has not deterred the management from pursuing regular operations, including contract renewals for key personnel.
Despite recent challenges, including public disputes with players like Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, Ten Hag is viewed as a unifying force providing stability during uncertain times for the club.
The potential acquisition of Manchester United by interested parties like Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim is still pending a response from the Glazers, with the Raine Group overseeing the takeover awaiting further communication. The Glazers reportedly seek £6 billion for a complete sale of the club.
