Manchester United have announced the signing of a £70 million-rated Premier League star — the very player who caused major problems for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City during last season’s clashes.

Manchester United have officially completed the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, marking the club’s first acquisition of the summer under new head coach Rúben Amorim, who personally endorsed the transfer as part of his attacking overhaul.

Cunha, 26, impressed last season with 15 goals and six assists in the Premier League, earning widespread praise for his energetic pressing, quick footwork, and technical quality.

His standout performances — including strong showings against Manchester City — drew attention from several top European sides, but United moved swiftly to secure his signature.

The Red Devils activated Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause, with the total value of the deal expected to climb to around £70 million through performance-based bonuses.

The payment will be split into three installments of roughly £20.85 million over the next two years, helping the club manage their limited transfer budget.

Cunha’s wages will also see a significant boost, rising from £120,000 a week at Wolves to £200,000 at United.

In an official club announcement, United confirmed the agreement with Wolves, noting that the transfer remains subject to final visa and registration procedures — both considered routine.

The player is expected to complete his medical in London within the next 24 to 48 hours.

His arrival fills a major gap in United’s front line. Last season, none of the club’s forwards reached double figures in league goals, with Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee combining for just seven.

By contrast, Cunha alone contributed to 21 goals, immediately improving United’s attacking output.

Amorim views Cunha as a key component in his tactical setup.

The Brazilian’s ability to operate as a central striker, second forward, or wide attacker aligns well with the high-tempo, flexible system Amorim plans to implement at Old Trafford.

The signing also signals United’s strong backing of Amorim’s vision, with a significant portion of the club’s estimated £100 million summer budget invested in this deal.

Cunha is expected to take the number 10 shirt, currently worn by Marcus Rashford, who is rumored to be heading out on loan — a further indication of the club’s belief in Cunha as a central figure in their offensive rebuild.

With Cunha secured, United are expected to continue pursuing further reinforcements, particularly in midfield and possibly another forward.

For now, though, they’ve added a proven Premier League talent ready to make an immediate impact.
