Manchester United and Barcelona are negotiating a possible swap deal involving Marcus Rashford, with Rúben Amorim describing the situation as a “hot potato” to handle.

Manchester United and Barcelona are reportedly in discussions over a potential swap deal involving Marcus Rashford, raising the possibility of the England forward leaving Old Trafford.

Following months of speculation, United now seem open to offers for Rashford in the January transfer window, having previously considered selling him during the summer.

Rashford’s position at the club has become increasingly uncertain under new manager Rúben Amorim.

Both he and teammate Alejandro Garnacho were notably left out of the squad for the recent Manchester derby, allegedly due to concerns over their attitude.

On Tuesday, Rashford hinted at a desire for a “new challenge,” fueling rumors about his potential departure.

His remarks have intensified speculation about his readiness to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Despite this, Amorim downplayed the situation in a Wednesday press conference, emphasizing Rashford’s importance to the team and suggesting the club would benefit from keeping a player of his caliber.

However, reports from Spain indicate advanced talks about a swap deal that could send Rashford to Barcelona in exchange for Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong, a long-standing target for Manchester United, has struggled for regular playing time under Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, starting only two matches this season.

Additionally, his high wages have made him a potential departure candidate for the Catalan club.

Amorim, however, views De Jong as a key addition to strengthen United’s midfield and align with his long-term vision for the team.

Reports suggest the proposed swap deal has been presented to Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco.

While Amorim publicly praises Rashford’s talent, insiders believe his actions behind the scenes indicate a pragmatic approach.

BBC Sport’s Simon Stone has noted Amorim’s careful handling of the situation, suggesting the manager’s true intentions will become clearer with time.

Amorim has set high standards for squad selection, and Rashford’s future at the club may depend on his ability to meet those expectations.

Both Rashford and Garnacho will be closely evaluated in training ahead of upcoming matches, including an EFL Cup fixture against Tottenham.

Although Rashford has reportedly recovered from an illness that disrupted his training this week, failing to impress could see him remain sidelined.

With key Premier League games against Bournemouth, Wolves, and Newcastle on the horizon, Rashford’s performance under Amorim’s management will likely determine whether he stays at Old Trafford or secures a move to Barcelona in January.
