The disparity in media coverage of Jurgen Klopp’s achievements at Anfield has irked Pep Guardiola, but it has also contributed to his team’s success.

Former assistant coach Brian Kidd advised Guardiola not to prioritize the League Cup when he joined Manchester City, suggesting, “Play the young players.

Nobody cares.” Despite this, Guardiola took the competition seriously and led City to four consecutive victories between 2018 and 2021. However, he felt that these achievements received little recognition compared to Liverpool’s victories in 2022 and 2024.

Guardiola expressed resentment, believing that Liverpool’s successes were portrayed differently in the media compared to City’s achievements.

He pointed out that in May 2019, after City narrowly defeated Liverpool in the Premier League, he felt that Liverpool’s accomplishments were celebrated more than City’s.

In an interview with beIN Sports, Guardiola suggested that the media, along with everyone in England, supported Liverpool during their intense title battle. However, Guardiola’s assertion seemed exaggerated, especially considering the diverse fan base in English football.

Guardiola also questioned the media’s bias when City faced scrutiny over financial regulations violations. He sarcastically asked if City was to blame for Steven Gerrard’s slip in 2014, emphasizing the unfair treatment his team received.

Despite the perceived bias, Guardiola found motivation in City’s rivalry with Liverpool, as maintaining a successful team requires continuous drive. He emphasized the importance of competition and how Liverpool’s success pushed City to perform better.

Ultimately, Guardiola acknowledged that Liverpool played a crucial role in City’s success and competitiveness. He recognized Klopp’s influence and the impact of Liverpool’s achievements on motivating City to excel.
