Following the players’ vote to elect their new leaders, Kyle Walker will continue to hold the Manchester City armband.
Walker was on the verge of leaving the Etihad in the summer to join Bayern Munich but decided to stay instead and signed a three-year contract extension keeping him there until 2026. The England international has served as captain for every game this season with the exception of the opening Premier League match at Burnley, where De Bruyne started as captain but was forced to leave due to injury.
As per customary, Pep Guardiola insisted that the team wait until the end of the transfer window before voting on the five players who would serve as the group captains. Rodri and Ruben Dias have also been chosen this time around in addition to Walker and De Bruyne.
Bernardo Silva, another player who had the option of leaving in the summer but chose to sign a new contract committing to the team until 2026, is the newest member of the group. Like Walker, the 29-year-old has been a member of the team for six years, and he has now been chosen as one of the five captains.
At the weekend, Guardiola discussed Silva’s importance to the team and how difficult it would be to replace him. Walker added to that by stating that gaining more vacation time might depend on his relationship with the management.
