Pep Guardiola might have been disappointed to witness Liverpool’s elimination from the FA Cup against Manchester United.
The 4-3 loss at Old Trafford not only dashed the visitors’ hopes of achieving an unlikely quadruple trophy haul but also eliminated the chance of one final cup encounter with the Spanish head coach.
“I don’t think so. We could potentially face each other in the FA Cup in the future. He’s young. I’m young… I completely respect his decision.
I’ve spoken with him and have the feeling that he will return sooner rather than later. His love for football and passion is evident,” the former Barcelona boss had expressed to reporters (via The Guardian) in early March.
Liverpool.com now suggests the slim possibility of a playoff match being arranged. This would occur if both Liverpool and Manchester City finish level on points, goals scored, and goal difference.
The playoff scenario would rely on the results of the previous two league meetings between the two teams. Imagine the Premier League title being decided by a playoff match between two of English football’s top teams, and in Jurgen Klopp’s final season, no less.
Typically, head-to-head records and away goals would serve as tiebreakers, but with both sides drawing 1-1 at the Etihad and Anfield, these factors would be nullified. Nonetheless, meeting the remaining criteria over the remainder of the campaign seems highly improbable.
Nevertheless, the prospect of the league title being decided in such a manner would be quite remarkable!
