A Liverpool youth player is facing a significant suspension after admitting to a disciplinary charge stemming from a match earlier this year.

During a match between Liverpool’s under-18 team and their Manchester United counterparts in late January, an incident occurred involving Luca Furnell-Gill, who was seen aiming a punch at Ethan Wheatley and later appearing to throw an elbow during a subsequent altercation between the two players.

While the on-field referee did not take immediate disciplinary action, the incident resulted in a violent conduct charge from the Football Association.

The 17-year-old has accepted the charge, resulting in a five-match suspension, according to reports from the Liverpool Echo.

Although the incident involving Furnell-Gill was unsightly, it is noted by the Liverpool Echo that the teenager showed genuine remorse afterward. The club addressed the matter internally, and Academy director Alex Inglethorpe reached out to Manchester United the following morning to offer an apology.

Crucially, there was no lasting harm inflicted on Wheatley, who has since played and scored for Manchester United’s under-18 team.

Furnell-Gill and Liverpool are accepting the consequences of the five-match ban, and the young defender will use it as a learning experience as he continues his development in the youth ranks.
