Darwin Nunez has been handed a five-match suspension from representing Uruguay, following the chaotic scenes that unfolded after their 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Copa America.
Nunez was among those involved in the altercations between players and fans after the semi-final match in July.
CONMEBOL, the governing body for South American football, conducted an investigation involving 11 players and has now issued their rulings.
According to *El Observador*, Nunez received the most severe punishment, with a five-game ban and a $20,000 fine.
The suspension only applies to international matches, meaning Nunez can still play for Liverpool.
Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur received a four-game ban and a $16,000 fine, while Jose Maria Gimenez, Mathias Olivera, and Ronald Araujo each face three-game suspensions and $12,000 fines.
Additionally, six other players, including Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez and Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistri, were fined $5,000 each, while the Uruguayan Football Association was fined $20,000.
*El Observador* reports that Nunez will miss Uruguay’s World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay (Sept 7), Venezuela (Sept 10), Peru (Oct 11), Ecuador (Oct 16), and Colombia (Nov 14).
This means he will be unavailable for the next two international breaks, though manager Marcelo Bielsa is expected to call him back for the second qualifier in November against Brazil.
Following the events in North Carolina, Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez explained: “Colombian fans in a certain section descended on our families.
Our families were in danger. We had to rush into the stands to remove our loved ones, including tiny newborn babies. It was a total disaster. There wasn’t a single police officer present; they only arrived half an hour later.”
Colombia later lost to Argentina in the Copa America final, while Uruguay secured third place by defeating Canada in the playoff.
