Liverpool star Cody Gakpo could face a **ban following his actions** during the match against Tottenham Hotspur.

One Liverpool player may be facing disciplinary action following Sunday’s celebrations at Anfield, due to a possible violation of a lesser-known football regulation.

After Cody Gakpo netted the Reds’ third goal in their 5-1 win over Tottenham — a result that secured their 20th league title — the forward celebrated by removing his shirt to reveal a vest reading “I Belong to Jesus.”

Referee Thomas Bramall issued a yellow card, as per the rules for removing a jersey, but further consequences may follow.

Gakpo could be punished for breaching FA rule on religious messages

According to The Telegraph, Gakpo’s celebration might have violated Law 4 of the FA rulebook, which bans players from displaying political, religious, or personal messages on undergarments.

Sanctions for such infractions can be imposed by the FA, the competition organizer, or FIFA, though it’s unclear what penalty — if any — Gakpo might face.

A minor act under a major spotlight

While rules are rules, many fans and pundits feel punishing Gakpo for a joyful and personal gesture seems excessive, especially in light of more serious offences that sometimes go unpunished.

Whether the FA issues a fine or a suspension, the incident raises broader questions about the proportionality and enforcement of football’s regulations.

With Liverpool already confirmed as champions, any sanction likely won’t impact the remainder of their season — but it could spark renewed debate about expression and fairness in the modern game.
