Liverpool preparing €100M bid for Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni

In just 24 hours, Liverpool fans have been hit with a wave of exciting updates. David Ornstein’s report that the club is assessing overseas defensive midfield options arrived almost at the same time as fresh links to Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni.

The overlap in these stories has sparked major debate, with many believing Liverpool are gearing up for a major defensive overhaul under Arne Slot.

Interest in Bastoni would represent one of Liverpool’s boldest transfer targets for the next window. According to Indykaila News, “Liverpool enquired about Alessandro Bastoni. Talks have started between all parties. The player wants the move #LFC.”

While Indykaila’s reputation is mixed, some of their scoops have been accurate, adding intrigue to the rumour. If true, bringing Bastoni to Anfield would be a huge statement given his quality and importance at Inter.

The timing is also noteworthy. Inter Milan recently underwent an ownership change after financial issues under Suning Holdings led to a takeover by Oaktree Capital Management.

With debts to resolve, the new owners may be more willing to sell valuable players — putting Bastoni firmly in the spotlight as a possible departure.

From a tactical point of view, Bastoni fits seamlessly into Liverpool’s modern system. Although his aerial numbers may concern some supporters, his intelligence and technical sharpness more than make up for it.

Compared to Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah, who shines defensively, Bastoni stands out for his progressive play.

FBref statistics show him in the 95th percentile or higher for several creative and build-up metrics: 95th for assists, 99th for expected assisted goals, 99th for shot-creating actions, 97th for progressive passes, and 97th for progressive carries.

These figures underline how he can advance play and influence attacking phases — exactly what Liverpool want from a left-sided centre-back.

However, a deal would be expensive. With a valuation around €70 million and a contract running until 2028, Inter will not let him leave cheaply.

His salary demands would be significant too, but Liverpool’s need for a ball-playing defender on the left might justify the outlay.

For now, supporters should stay cautiously hopeful. Indykaila’s report is exciting, but confirmation from trusted journalists like Ornstein or Paul Joyce will determine how realistic the move is.

If Bastoni does eventually join, he could be the key piece Liverpool need to solidify their defence and enhance their build-up play — making this one rumour worth keeping an eye on.
