Uncertainty continues to surround Darwin Nunez’s future at Liverpool, with global transfer developments potentially offering swift clarity.
The striker is once again linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League — this time with a sense of urgency in the air.
Nunez had initially committed to new head coach Arne Slot’s plans for the 2024/25 season, but managed just seven goals across all competitions — a noticeable dip from the 18 he scored the previous season and the 15 he netted in his first year under Jurgen Klopp.
Despite his underwhelming form, Liverpool rejected a Saudi offer for the Uruguayan forward in January, hoping to keep their Premier League title hopes intact.
Nunez’s last start came on March 8 against Southampton — the same day he last scored — and he played a minimal role in the title run-in. Now, Liverpool are once again facing familiar transfer questions, with limited time to act.
According to talkSPORT, Nunez is among two players under serious late consideration by Saudi club Al-Hilal, who are eager to secure a marquee signing ahead of this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.
So far, their attempts have been unsuccessful, with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen both reportedly turning down offers.
Osimhen, who scored 37 goals during a loan spell at Galatasaray in 2024/25, has previously been linked with Liverpool.
Additionally, Portuguese outlet A Bola reports that Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres has also declined a move to Al-Hilal.
The 27-year-old, who has scored an astonishing 97 goals in 102 games over the past two seasons, is another player rumoured to interest Liverpool.
Gyokeres is said to prefer a Premier League move, which could potentially benefit Liverpool — though they would need to act quickly.
Al-Hilal must finalize any signings by Tuesday night to register them for the Club World Cup.
This urgency could work in Liverpool’s favour if they look to recover part of the £85 million they paid Benfica for Nunez in 2022.
Especially knowing that Al-Hilal were reportedly ready to spend £100 million on Fernandes and £63 million on other striker targets.
For now, Liverpool’s leadership isn’t under pressure. They’re currently focusing on potential signings like Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez, but once the transfer window reopens on June 16, a new striker could be next on the agenda.
