Liverpool’s Summer Transfer Plans Could Be Impacted by Contract Extensions*

Writing for The Athletic, Liverpool’s Anfield correspondent highlighted the potential financial impact of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah signing new contracts.

He noted that while securing their futures would reduce the need for major business in the transfer window, it would also limit the club’s available funds for new signings.

As speculation about Liverpool’s summer activity grows, the report provides a dose of reality. The club recently recorded a £57 million pre-tax loss from last season and currently has the second-highest wage bill in the Premier League, standing at £386 million per year.

Should Liverpool Fans Be Concerned About Spending Power?

One point not even mentioned in the article is Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation, which raises further questions. If his renewal was left out of the discussion, does that suggest his future at Anfield is in doubt?

Most fans will want to see Van Dijk and Salah stay, but securing their extensions could mean fewer funds available for a marquee signing.

Whether this is a concern depends on perspective—Liverpool’s recruitment team has shown a strong track record in finding the right players at the right price.

Confidence is growing that Van Dijk will stay, with rumors of a potential PSG move being dismissed. However, if he does sign an extension, it could impact Liverpool’s ability to invest in a long-term defensive replacement.

If Liverpool sees Alexander Isak as the ideal No.9 signing, tying Salah down to a new deal could make funding such a move more difficult.

Ultimately, it looks set to be a complicated summer of balancing new signings, player departures, and financial management.

But if Liverpool enter the window as Premier League champions, perhaps there’s reason to trust those making the big decisions.
