Liverpool are contemplating recruiting a Bundesliga defender in January as Jurgen Klopp aims to reinforce their defense for the latter part of the season.
The Reds faced a setback with Joel Matip’s ACL injury, potentially ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign. Despite having Ibou Konate, Joe Gomez, Jarrell Quansah, and Virgil van Dijk available, a recent report from 90min (via HITC) suggests Liverpool is eyeing Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah in the upcoming transfer window.
Tah, excelling under Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen, contributes to the side currently leading the Bundesliga by four points. Since his move from Hamburg in 2015, the Germany international has made 324 appearances, boasting significant experience.
Liverpool’s interest in the towering defender dates back to 2017, and sporting director Jorg Schmadtke’s Bundesliga background, where three out of four summer signings originated, adds weight to the speculation.
The belief is that Klopp and his team feel Tah, aged 27, could be enticed away from Leverkusen in January and seamlessly fit into their setup when required.
However, Leverkusen, pursuing Bundesliga success under Alonso, might be reluctant to part ways with key players mid-season. Tah’s contract with the club extends until 2025, granting Leverkusen control over any potential transfer fee.
Despite confidence in the current defensive roster, augmenting the options appears beneficial for a squad competing on multiple fronts this season.
