Liverpool forward Luis Diaz has expressed that Mohamed Salah’s potential departure would be a significant blow to the team.
Salah, who signed his current contract in 2022, is in the final year of his deal. Despite ongoing rumors about a possible summer exit, Salah remains at Anfield, though negotiations for a contract extension appear to have stalled.
However, Salah has had an excellent start to the season, scoring in all three of Liverpool’s matches, helping them sit second in the Premier League, just behind Manchester City on goal difference.
Diaz, who scored twice in Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United with assists from Salah, spoke to Telemundo (via the Daily Mail), emphasizing the impact Salah’s departure would have on the club:
“It would be hard for both us and Liverpool. Losing him would hurt deeply. He still has a year left, and it’s not an easy decision.
He always gives his best. Losing such a key player would be very challenging, but it’s his choice, and we respect that. I hope he stays.”
After the match at Old Trafford, Salah suggested it could have been his final appearance at the stadium, telling Sky Sports (via the Daily Mail), “I thought before the game this might be my last time at Old Trafford.
No one has discussed a new contract with me. It’s not in my hands, it’s up to the club. We’ll see what happens.”
He added, “It’s my last year here, and I want to enjoy it without focusing too much on the contract. For now, I’m concentrating on football, and we’ll see what the future brings.”
Salah, who joined Liverpool in 2017, has been one of the team’s most important players. Over his seven years at Anfield, he has made 352 appearances, scoring 214 goals and providing 92 assists, winning every major trophy with the club except the UEFA Europa League.
In the previous season, Salah scored 25 goals and made 14 assists in 44 matches across all competitions, the last under manager Jürgen Klopp.
His recent goal at Old Trafford also equaled Alan Shearer’s record for most goals scored by a player in away games against a single Premier League team, with 10 goals against Leeds United.
