A member of Liverpool’s 2019/20 Premier League-winning squad might return to English football this summer, though at an unexpected destination.
According to Turkish outlet Sabah, Besiktas are willing to sell Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain if a suitable offer comes in, as they don’t plan to retain the 30-year-old.
The midfielder is reportedly keen on returning to England, just a year after leaving Liverpool on a free transfer, with Sheffield United showing interest in acquiring him.
Oxlade-Chamberlain had notable moments at Liverpool, particularly in two wins over Manchester City in the 2017/18 season.
However, frequent injuries prevented him from consistently showcasing his talents under Jurgen Klopp. He scored four goals in Liverpool’s 2019/20 title-winning campaign and matched that tally with Besiktas in the 2023/24 season, though he missed four months due to a thigh injury. Besiktas is now ready to part ways with him after just one year.
Oxlade-Chamberlain’s current wages in Istanbul are £2.1m per year, about £40,000 per week, which is higher than most Sheffield United players’ earnings.
Despite their relegation to the Championship, which is likely to reduce their wage bill, signing Oxlade-Chamberlain would be a significant move for the Blades and the English second tier.
Regardless of where he plays next season, there is hope that Oxlade-Chamberlain can finally have an injury-free campaign, allowing him to reach his full potential after a promising start at Anfield that was marred by injuries.
