Manchester United aimed to build on their recent confidence-boosting 0-0 draw against Liverpool when facing West Ham. Erik ten Hag fielded a robust starting XI featuring Andre Onana in goal, with a defense comprising Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Willy Kambwala, Jonny Evans, and Luke Shaw.

The midfield trio consisted of Kobbie Mainoo, Scott McTominay, and Bruno Fernandes, while Rasmus Hojlund led the attack, supported by Alejandro Garnacho and Antony.

The match highlighted Alejandro Garnacho’s need to enhance his productivity. Despite recent appearances suggesting a lead over Marcus Rashford in Ten Hag’s plans, Garnacho struggled to make a notable impact against West Ham. Though recognized for his one-on-one skills against defenders, he found himself contained by Coufal and Edson Alvarez.

Garnacho’s inefficiency became apparent when he had clear chances to score. In the 35th minute, he missed an opportunity as the ball got stuck between his feet, resulting in a weak shot that didn’t trouble Areola. In another instance, Garnacho chose to pass to McTominay instead of shooting, but the cross was intercepted.

While Garnacho usually positions himself well, his difficulty in finishing opportunities has been an ongoing issue. This lack of precision proved costly against West Ham and was penalizing for the team. In the second half, Garnacho, like many teammates, struggled to offer much. His youth and learning curve need recognition, stressing the urgent need to improve his finishing and precision.

Looking forward, Garnacho’s development should focus on refining these aspects to become a more efficient and dependable presence in Manchester United’s goal-scoring opportunities.
