Angel Gomes could be set for a return to English football, five years after departing Manchester United, as a Premier League club has shown interest in signing the midfielder.
Gomes, a product of United’s youth academy, made his first-team debut in 2017 under Jose Mourinho and featured in 10 matches for the club. However, in 2020, he chose not to extend his contract and moved to Lille in France.
Shortly after his transfer, Gomes spent a season on loan at Boavista in Portugal, where he scored six goals in 32 appearances.
Since returning to Lille, he has featured in 130 matches, scoring nine goals. His impressive displays have earned him four senior England caps, following a successful youth career with the national team from U16 to U21 levels.
With his contract at Lille set to expire at the end of the season, Gomes could leave on a free transfer if he does not agree to a new deal.
According to talkSPORT, West Ham United are interested in bringing Gomes back to the Premier League.
The Hammers, under newly appointed manager Graham Potter, are also reportedly monitoring his Lille teammate Jonathan David. Both players could move on free transfers in the summer if their contracts are not renewed.
The report does not specify whether West Ham plan to make a move for Gomes or David during the January transfer window, which would be Lille’s final chance to secure a transfer fee for either player.
Gomes’s potential return to England has generated intrigue, with the 23-year-old now recognized for his growth, versatility, and creativity since leaving Manchester United.
