Former Premier League and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given has urged Liverpool’s backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to leave the club, even if it means pushing for a move.
Shay Given’s Call for Kelleher to Move On
Speaking to *The Mirror*, Given emphasized that the 25-year-old has the potential to become a world-class goalkeeper but is being held back by limited opportunities at Anfield.
“Kelleher played 26 games last season and proved he has the quality to be a Premier League No. 1,” Given said. “But he turns 26 later this month, and if I’m being honest, he needs to leave Liverpool to make that happen.”
Given added that Liverpool manager Arne Slot’s public assertion that Alisson Becker will always be the first-choice goalkeeper is likely disheartening for Kelleher.
“Every footballer wants to believe they’re competing for a starting spot, but for Caoimhin, it’s clear he’ll always be behind Alisson – one of the world’s best.”
He continued: “Kelleher has been loyal to Liverpool, but he’s at a stage in his career where he needs to prioritize his own development.
Sometimes, you have to force the issue, even if it’s not pleasant. In ten years, he doesn’t want to look back and feel he missed his chance.”
Kelleher’s Contributions and Future
Since his Liverpool debut in 2019, Kelleher has made 55 appearances, keeping 19 clean sheets. He has consistently impressed when called upon, including his heroics in the 2022 League Cup final, where he scored the decisive penalty in a dramatic shootout win against Chelsea.
Despite his contributions, Kelleher has primarily served as Alisson’s understudy. He reportedly came close to leaving last summer amid interest from Nottingham Forest, but Liverpool rejected any bids.
With Liverpool signing Giorgi Mamardashvili as a long-term successor to Alisson, Kelleher’s future at the club appears uncertain.
Reports suggest the Irish international has already informed those close to him of his intention to leave next summer, likely seeking a move to a club where he can establish himself as a first-choice goalkeeper.
His situation has drawn interest from teams in need of a quality No. 1, making a departure increasingly likely as he looks to fulfill his potential.
