Liverpool have received a significant boost ahead of their Saturday match against Wolves, as Alisson Becker is set to return from a short-term injury to start in goal for the Reds.
The Brazilian goalkeeper had missed the last two games after suffering a minor hamstring injury during Liverpool’s Champions League opener against AC Milan last week.
Alisson, 31, resumed full training this week and participated in the entire session with the squad on Friday in preparation for the Wolves match.
During his pre-match press conference, Arne Slot confirmed that Alisson is ready to play at Molineux, which is a huge advantage for Liverpool, as the former Roma player has been a key figure for the team in recent seasons.
“We believe he is ready to play,” Slot said of Alisson, via The Athletic. “He trained yesterday with the group and is expected to complete today’s session. So we think he’s available.”
While Slot expressed his happiness about Alisson’s return, he also praised Caoimhin Kelleher’s performances in Alisson’s absence, highlighting the quality of goalkeeping options Liverpool has.
Despite Kelleher’s strong displays in the last two matches, Alisson’s return may emphasize that Kelleher, at 25, needs to seek more regular playing time elsewhere.
With Giorgi Mamardashvili expected to join Liverpool next summer, this season may be Kelleher’s last at Anfield, as he looks for more opportunities outside the club.
