Reports indicate that Manchester United is gearing up to pursue the talented Benfica midfielder Joao Neves, who, at 19 years old, has already established himself as a rising star in European football.
Neves, a holding midfielder, has featured in 27 matches during the current season, including six in the Champions League, making him a coveted candidate for a high-profile transfer in the near future.
Despite being under contract with Benfica until 2028, Neves’s deal includes a release clause of €120 million (£103 million). Manchester United has reportedly identified him as a top target and is planning to initiate talks for a potential summer transfer, as per The Mirror.
The move is considered a “priority investment” following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a 25 percent ownership stake in the club and subsequent influence over football operations. Manchester United aims to start groundwork on the transfer to fend off competition for Neves.
This strategic approach aligns with United’s goal to strengthen the team, especially in the defensive midfield position. With Casemiro nearing his 32nd birthday and Sofyan Amrabat expected to be a loan signing, additional reinforcements in this area may be necessary.
Despite Benfica manager Roger Schmidt stating that key players won’t move in the January transfer window, United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of Neves joining the club. Fernandes praised Neves, stating he would be thrilled to have him at United. However, Fernandes acknowledged that the decision ultimately lies with Neves and the manager’s vision.
The MEN: Sport reported in September that United is targeting significant acquisitions in four different areas during the upcoming summer, with center midfield being one of the positions despite recent acquisitions like Amrabat and Mason Mount.
