It could have been one of the most significant transfers of the summer, sparking reactions across Merseyside.

However, Liverpool’s efforts to sign former Everton winger Anthony Gordon ultimately ended in disappointment.

The Reds had reached a £75 million agreement with Newcastle, which included Joe Gomez moving to the Magpies for £45 million.

But Newcastle pulled out of the deal after resolving their Profit and Sustainability Rules issues by selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion.

Although Gordon rose through Everton’s academy and played a key role in their 2021-22 relegation fight, he originally began at Liverpool.

Since his £45 million move to Newcastle in January 2023, he hasn’t hidden his childhood loyalty to Liverpool.

When the England international, overlooked by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024, struggled at the beginning of this Premier League season, questions arose about whether Liverpool’s interest had distracted him.

However, Gordon put an end to the speculation by signing a new long-term contract with Newcastle, dismissing rumors of his head being turned.

“The perception was that because I didn’t start well, the speculation was true, but in reality, I just wasn’t very fit,” the 23-year-old told NUFCTV (via Newcastle World).

He explained how a challenging summer, spent mostly on the bench, affected him physically and mentally.

“It took me a few games to get back into form, but I never doubted I’d improve and regain my fitness,” he said.

Gordon emphasized his growing confidence and commitment to Newcastle’s style, acknowledging that outside perceptions are often shaped by misinformation.

He revealed that while the contract talks had been ongoing, the process was complicated, but he is fully dedicated to the club and happy with the outcome.
