Troy Deeney is likely to provoke the ire of Liverpool fans after controversially claiming that Mohamed Salah is “not world-class.”
Salah has been instrumental in Liverpool’s success under Jurgen Klopp, playing a key role in securing Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup titles, among other honors.
Despite continuing his impressive form under Arne Slot, with 10 goals and 10 assists in 17 appearances this season, Deeney believes the Egyptian forward falls short of the “world-class” label.
Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah has racked up 221 goals and 99 assists in 366 games—numbers widely seen as more than deserving of such a title.
However, speaking to *talkSPORT*, Deeney expressed a different view.
“I think Mohamed Salah is excellent; he’s crucial for Liverpool, and they should never have let his contract situation drag on,” Deeney said. “But, for me, I just don’t think he’s world-class.”
Deeney explained his criteria: “World-class, in my opinion, is when I’d want my kids to emulate a player. If I had to choose, I’d prefer them to model their game on Vinicius Jr. rather than Salah.”
He acknowledged Salah’s incredible goal-scoring record and effectiveness but stood firm on his view: “That’s just my opinion. He might look at this and say, ‘Who the **** is Troy?,’ and fair enough, but that’s how I see it.”
This perspective has sparked debate, with many likely to challenge Deeney’s controversial take.
