Virgil van Dijk has criticized referee Tony Harrington, suggesting he was too “nervous” to effectively manage Liverpool’s intense 2-2 draw against Fulham at Anfield.
The Reds, despite being reduced to 10 men after Andy Robertson’s red card in the 17th minute, fought back twice to secure a point in a match filled with contentious decisions.
Fulham took the lead early through Andreas Pereira, but Liverpool, with 16 shots and an xG of 2.26, could have emerged victorious on another day.
Robertson’s dismissal for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity was straightforward, but frustration grew over earlier incidents.
Issa Diop’s robust challenge on Robertson in the second minute resulted in a yellow card, and moments later, Pereira escaped with the same punishment for a reckless tackle on Ryan Gravenberch.
Former referee Mike Dean argued Pereira should have been sent off, describing the foul as a “100% red card.”
Speaking after the match, Van Dijk expressed disappointment with the officiating. “We showed great fight with 10 men and created chances, but it could have been more,” he said.
“I felt the referee was nervous. He couldn’t communicate properly with Robertson. We can’t fully blame him, but it’s frustrating.”
Van Dijk emphasized the need to move forward, stating, “We take the point, recover, and focus on Wednesday’s game.” Despite the draw, the chaotic match highlighted Liverpool’s resilience and ability to adapt under challenging circumstances.
