Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, has shifted focus to the upcoming January transfer window to bolster the squad, aiming to improve their underwhelming performance this season.

With only nine wins out of their initial 18 games, the club seeks significant changes when the domestic season resumes. The Dutch manager eyes several potential recruits in anticipation of a possible transfer to Manchester.

Reports from Football Insider indicate that Manchester United faces strong competition, mainly from Chelsea and Manchester City, for the signing of French teenage defender Arouna Sangante, whose current market value stands at €7.4 million (£6.5 million) as estimated by Football Transfers. While Le Havre might demand a higher fee, negotiations could be viable for Ten Hag.

The speculations surrounding Raphael Varane’s future emphasize the necessity of securing a second central defender. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg suggests Varane’s contemplation of a January exit from Bayern Munich, despite his contract running until 2025. Utilizing potential proceeds from Varane’s departure, Ten Hag might pursue a defensive reinforcement.

Although Varane’s future remains uncertain, Sangante emerges as a prospective successor. The 21-year-old, hailed by journalist Pete O’Rourke as a “sensation,” exhibited promise, notably aiding Le Havre’s return to Ligue 1 in the 2020–21 season with impressive contributions.

Sangante’s statistics showcase his prowess in accurate passes, interceptions, and clearances in Ligue 2, where he excelled. Transitioning to Ligue 1, he has continued to excel, contributing significantly to his team’s clean sheets against formidable opponents like AS Monaco and Lyon.

Despite Varane’s stronger defensive stats in the Premier League, Sangante displays remarkable leadership qualities and serves as the youngest captain in Ligue 1. While still in development, he presents as a capable defender and could benefit from exposure to European football by joining Manchester United.

The growing possibility of Varane’s departure aligns with Sangante’s suitability as an ideal replacement, according to the former Ajax manager’s preferences.
