Alexis MacAllister has been tested in a deeper midfield position by Liverpool, who spent nearly £150 million overhauling their midfield in the summer.
Neville, commenting after Arsenal’s razor-thin 1-0 victory against Man City, believes that if they want to be in the title race, they still need a holding midfielder in the manner of Rodri and Declan Rice.
They have a fantastic goalkeeper, who Neville predicts will keep them in many games, and they have plenty of strikers who are capable of scoring goals.
They have a strong forward line, and the midfield is attacking, but does it possess the same defensive prowess as what we’ve seen here today when Rodri returns and Rice, Partey, and Jorginho enter the picture?
“Do they possess that defensive steadiness?”Declan Rice or Rodri in holding midfield, in my opinion, would put Liverpool well in contention to win the championship.
“My concern is whether they have enough defensive power and strength in the middle of the field.”Liverpool’s manager, who is really amazing and among the best, is the reason they are in the race, even though I don’t think they will quite make it. “I think it will be Arsenal and City again coming towards the end,” I said. “The manager is absolutely outstanding, he’s one of the best.”
Neville said that Liverpool had a better chance of winning the championship than the team now in first place, Tottenham, who had enjoyed a strong start to the year under new manager Ange Postecoglou.
