After West Ham’s convincing win against Manchester United, Paul Scholes criticized Erik ten Hag for being tactically “naive” in away games, highlighting ongoing issues against stronger opponents under the Dutchman’s management.

United has faced difficulties away from home under Ten Hag, as seen in recent defeats against West Ham, Tottenham, Arsenal, and Newcastle this season. Even in the previous Premier League season, their away struggles were evident in a heavy 7-0 loss at Anfield. Additionally, their early Champions League exit partly stemmed from poor performances in away fixtures.

During an analysis on TNT Sports, Scholes pointed out concerns with Ten Hag’s tactical approach, stating, “They had difficulties in big games last year, and I felt it was naive to play with one holding midfielder and the rest in an attacking mode when visiting tough away grounds.” Scholes emphasized the challenge of employing such tactics against top English teams.

For the West Ham game, Ten Hag’s surprise inclusion of 19-year-old Willy Kambwala in the starting lineup due to Varane’s absence and Maguire’s suspension initially raised concerns for Scholes. He mentioned, “West Ham is a tough side to face, especially with their potent forwards.”

United’s subsequent 2-0 defeat against West Ham, dropping them to eighth place, has amplified pressure on Ten Hag, who now faces increased scrutiny. The upcoming Boxing Day match against Aston Villa at Old Trafford adds urgency for Ten Hag to address the team’s performance issues promptly.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe expected to acquire a twenty-five percent share in the club, the team’s trajectory may be influenced. As the January transfer window approaches, Ten Hag’s position becomes more precarious, demanding improvements and strategic adjustments to reinvigorate United’s form both away and at home.

Given these challenges, Ten Hag’s ability to strike the right tactical balance and resolve away-game struggles will be crucial for Manchester United’s success in the remainder of the season.
