Fabrizio Romano has reported that Harvey Elliott is due to return to Liverpool from his loan at Aston Villa, with another temporary move likely to follow.
The 22-year-old found opportunities limited at Anfield before leaving on loan last summer, and his spell at Villa Park has also failed to deliver the breakthrough he would have hoped for.
Liverpool would have wanted Elliott to get regular Premier League minutes, either to prove he could come back and challenge for a place in Arne Slot’s squad, or to raise his value ahead of a potential permanent transfer.
Romano has now stated on X that Elliott will be recalled by Liverpool and may then be sent out again, possibly to MLS side Charlotte FC.
A move to a club like Charlotte could be a significant signing for them, as Elliott still has the potential to develop into a top-level player as he moves into his prime.
Once viewed as one of England’s brightest young talents during his time at Fulham, Elliott’s progress has slowed, but he still has plenty of time to get his career back on track.
Is there still a role for Elliott at Liverpool?
Liverpool have endured a demanding season, and extra options in midfield and attack could be useful.
Even so, given that Elliott struggled at Liverpool and has not stood out on loan at Villa, it is difficult to see him currently having the impact needed to strengthen the squad in a meaningful way.
