Arne Slot’s Liverpool maintained their position at the top of the Premier League with a straightforward 2-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

However, some fans believe Darwin Nunez, who scored both stoppage-time goals, was fortunate to avoid being sent off.

Thomas Frank’s Brentford, now 11th in the table, delivered a disciplined performance at the Gtech Community Stadium but were undone by Nunez’s late heroics.

The 33-cap Uruguayan international, who has 13 goals for his country, entered the match in the 65th minute, replacing Luis Diaz.

Having seen limited game time this season, Nunez seized the opportunity to make a statement ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming clash with Lille.

Nunez broke the deadlock in the 91st minute, converting a low cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold to leave the home side stunned.

Just two minutes later, he doubled Liverpool’s lead with a composed finish, silencing his critics and securing all three points for his team.

However, controversy struck in the 95th minute when Nunez made a reckless challenge on Brentford’s Nathan Collins as the defender attempted to clear the ball.

Despite the risky tackle, the Liverpool forward escaped without a second yellow card.

While Liverpool fans will be relieved to take home three points, many believe Nunez was fortunate to avoid further punishment.

The 25-year-old has endured a challenging season since Arne Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp in the summer, falling down the pecking order behind players like Diaz and Diogo Jota.

With 37 goals and 21 assists in 122 games for Liverpool, Nunez’s contributions are notable, but he continues to struggle for consistency under Slot’s management.
