Fabrizio Romano has provided insight into Anthony Gordon’s mindset regarding a potential departure from Newcastle United this summer.
The England international was open to a move but wasn’t actively pursuing it.
Despite Financial Fair Play pressures, Newcastle met their PSR requirements by selling players like Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £30m after he rejected a move to Olympique Lyon.
Romano, speaking on the Here We Go podcast, mentioned that Newcastle explored the possibility of a swap deal involving Gordon with Liverpool, who were interested in the talented player.
Gordon was open to the possibility but was waiting for Newcastle’s decision. Ultimately, no deal was close to being finalized as Newcastle didn’t lower their price, and Gordon, along with Isak, stayed with the club.
Gordon contributed 23 goals in 48 games for Newcastle in the 2023/24 season.
While Liverpool admires Gordon, his position as a left winger raises questions since they already have players like Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez for that flank.
Liverpool’s priority should be finding a long-term understudy for Mo Salah on the right flank.
