Manchester United have confirmed that Lisandro Martínez has suffered a cruciate ligament injury during Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

Martínez was injured in the 82nd minute and had to be stretchered off after receiving treatment.

A club statement said: “Manchester United can confirm that Lisandro Martínez has sustained a cruciate ligament injury during Sunday’s match against Crystal Palace.

The injury is being assessed to determine the best course of action and the rehabilitation timeline.

Everyone at Manchester United wishes Lisandro Martínez strength for a successful recovery and will support him throughout the process.”

This injury follows a similar setback nearly a year ago, when Martínez damaged his medial collateral ligament in a win over West Ham. He had just returned from that injury before suffering another issue with his calf, sidelining him for another six weeks.

Ruben Amorim commented, “He will be out for some time. We’re not sure about the full extent yet, but it will require time.”

Amorim also mentioned that it was wise to be cautious with Luke Shaw, who has a small issue in a different area from his last injury.

Amorim acknowledged that if results don’t improve, he’ll face criticism for not bringing in experienced players during the winter transfer window. “It’s clear, but it’s also exciting,” he said.

“I knew this profession came with the risk of results, and I knew when I came here that making changes mid-season without new signings was risky.

But I have a clear vision, and I’m willing to take these risks because, in the end, it will pay off. But I’m not naive. I’ve said it many times: this is a results-driven sport, and we are in a difficult situation.”

This is a significant blow for both Martínez and Manchester United. A cruciate ligament injury is one of the most severe injuries a player can face, and for Martínez, who has already dealt with a tough, injury-riddled season, this is especially unlucky.

The timing is also unfortunate, as United are struggling to salvage something from a challenging campaign.

Amorim’s remarks reflect the mounting pressure on him. Taking over mid-season without reinforcements was always a gamble, and losing a key player like Martínez only adds to the challenge.

His comments on Shaw also highlight the ongoing defensive concerns, especially if his fitness remains a worry.

Given this situation, do you think United should accelerate their pursuit of another centre-back this summer? Players like Matthijs de Ligt or Jarrad Branthwaite could become even more crucial now.
