Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has decided not to call up a replacement for suspended captain Virgil van Dijk (33) ahead of their crucial match against Germany on Monday.

Van Dijk was sent off during the 1-1 Nations League draw with Hungary, receiving two yellow cards in just three minutes.

The first was for dissent after protesting a foul on Donyell Malen, and the second for a clear booking-worthy foul.

Koeman expressed confusion over the first yellow card, stating, “I thought captains were allowed to speak to the referee. The foul on Malen deserved a red card.”

He acknowledged that Van Dijk’s second yellow was unfortunate, but the defender understands his mistake.

Koeman confirmed he will not be adding to his squad ahead of the match against Germany, who lead Group A3 of the Nations League with seven points, two ahead of the Netherlands.

The upcoming fixture is crucial, as the Dutch could either move to the top of the group or fall five points behind with two games left.

Despite the draw in Budapest, Koeman was left with a “reasonable feeling” after his team equalized late through Denzel Dumfries, even with Van Dijk off the pitch.

Koeman praised his side’s resilience, saying, “We didn’t give up, defended well, and left with a fair result.”
