Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly both interested in signing Aston Villa’s highly-regarded striker Ollie Watkins when the January transfer window opens.

The 27-year-old has drawn considerable attention after an outstanding 2022/23 season in which he netted 15 Premier League goals, helping Aston Villa qualify for European competition for the first time in over a decade.

Watkins has continued his strong form this season, with one goal and two assists so far. His performances have led Aston Villa manager Unai Emery to emphasize his desire to keep the England international at the club.

Emery recently confirmed that negotiations are ongoing between Villa and Watkins’ representatives regarding a new contract, stating, “We are in touch, and I am working on it.”

Although Aston Villa initiated contract talks with Watkins in May, no agreement has been reached, sparking interest from several Premier League clubs.

Reports indicate both Arsenal and Chelsea are eager to sign Watkins in January, with a potential bidding war brewing between the two London sides.

However, Villa is unlikely to let their star striker go without a fight, with previous reports valuing him at around £60 million.

Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, is reportedly in talks with Watkins’ agent, Paulo Vernazza, about a possible mid-season move to the Emirates.

While Arsenal seems to be leading the pursuit, Chelsea is expected to compete for Watkins’ signature.

Serie A club AC Milan has also expressed interest as they look for a long-term replacement for Olivier Giroud.

Arsenal and Chelsea have strong reasons to target Watkins. Arsenal has started the season well but lacks a reliable, high-scoring center-forward, which could hinder their title chances. Watkins could fill that gap and strengthen their attack.

Chelsea, in contrast, has struggled under new manager Mauricio Pochettino, earning just five points from their first six games and sitting 14th in the table.

With only five goals scored so far, Watkins’ Premier League experience and scoring ability could provide the boost they need to turn their season around.

As January nears, Watkins’ future will likely hinge on whether Aston Villa can finalize a new contract with him.

If not, both Arsenal and Chelsea are expected to make strong bids, making him one of the most sought-after players in the upcoming transfer window.
