Arne Slot has delivered a clear and composed response to the rising criticism surrounding Alexander Isak’s early struggles at Liverpool.
With the Reds preparing for a challenging Premier League clash against Leeds United, attention remains firmly on Isak, whose goals will be vital for the team.
The Swedish striker arrived at Anfield in the summer for a huge fee after long negotiations. Despite his progress being disrupted by fitness problems, expectations remain high.
It was only after the November international break that he finally secured a regular starting spot, allowing fans to get a clearer picture of how he fits into Slot’s system.
However, being back in the lineup has brought more scrutiny. Alan Shearer recently questioned how Liverpool are using Isak, pointing out how little he seems to be involved in overall play.
Those concerns intensified when, after scoring against West Ham, the striker struggled to make an impact in the following match against Sunderland.
As Liverpool continue adapting their attack to a number of new players, discussions about Isak’s low touch count have become increasingly common.
During his latest press conference, Slot was asked directly about the issue. A reporter noted that Isak had only 14 touches over his last three starts. Slot didn’t avoid the question; instead, he added context.
He replied: “No, that’s not ideal for me. But do you know his average at Newcastle?” When the reporter said he didn’t, Slot answered: “Twenty-two.” He explained that many Premier League centre-forwards work with few touches, and the real focus is on how effective they are with the chances they do get.
In fact, Isak’s numbers at Liverpool are only slightly below his Newcastle average, which still fits the demands of Slot’s efficient, goals-first attacking style.
Another challenge for Isak has been the instability on Liverpool’s right side. Injuries have forced Slot to use Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, and Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back — none of whom naturally suit the position.
This has weakened Liverpool’s threat on that flank and limited the quality of crosses reaching Isak. Slot did share some positive injury updates, though.
He confirmed that Gomez is expected to return to training, and Conor Bradley has completed full sessions this week and should be available.
Bradley’s return could be key, as his natural attacking instincts and early crosses are exactly the type of service Isak thrives on.
As Liverpool push on with their Premier League title defence, Isak remains vital to Slot’s plans. His movement, composure, and technical ability mean he is central to Liverpool’s long-term strategy.
Slot is confident that as the team settles, injured players return, and the supply improves, Isak will soon prove why Liverpool invested so heavily to bring him to Anfield.
