The agent of Manchester United winger Antony has revealed that Liverpool showed interest in signing the Brazilian international before Mohamed Salah extended his contract in 2022.
This interest reportedly emerged as Liverpool considered alternatives while Salah’s future at the club was still uncertain.
Liverpool star Salah is now approaching the period where he can engage in pre-contract discussions with clubs outside England, as his current deal nears its expiration.
Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also in the final months of their contracts, adding to Liverpool’s contract considerations.
A recent report in *The Times* mentioned that Antony, who has struggled since his £81.3 million transfer from Ajax to Manchester United in the summer of 2022, was among the players Liverpool had shortlisted two years ago when Salah’s situation remained unresolved.
Antony’s agent, Junior Pedroso, confirmed the Anfield interest in an interview with *winwin.com*, stating:
“Yes, this story has a basis in truth. No (negotiations stopped as), Salah renewed his contract at the time with Liverpool, and that made Antony’s move to Liverpool impossible.”
Salah ultimately signed a record-breaking contract extension in June 2022, during a trip to the Greek island of Mykonos. Since then, he has continued to perform at a high level, scoring 65 goals for Liverpool, including 27 in the Premier League.
This season, under Arne Slot, Salah has already netted 10 goals in all competitions, bringing his total for the club to 221 goals since his 2017 transfer from Roma.
In contrast, Antony has faced challenges since his move to Old Trafford, contributing only five goals and three assists in 56 Premier League appearances.
The 24-year-old has played just twice this season for a struggling Manchester United side, which recently replaced Erik ten Hag with Ruben Amorim after a poor start to the campaign.
