Reportedly, Tottenham is eyeing a potential January transfer move for a Liverpool player. As per the Daily Mail, Spurs are planning to prioritize strengthening their defense once the transfer market reopens in the New Year, with Joe Gomez being among the targeted options next month.

The setback due to Cristian Romero’s injury, along with the absence of key players during the Asian Cup and Africa Cup of Nations, is expected to lead Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham’s manager, to seek support from the club’s leadership for mid-season signings.

Tottenham’s interest in acquiring Gomez is understandable as they seek to address their defensive shortage, but Liverpool might not entertain their approach for the £85,000-per-week England international.

Gomez’s significance to Jurgen Klopp’s team has grown recently due to injuries to Joel Matip and Kostas Tsimikas. With Andy Robertson still recovering, Gomez has even filled in at left-back in recent matches.

Known for his versatility across the defensive line, Gomez’s adaptability is a crucial asset for Liverpool, highlighted by Gary Neville’s praise during a previous win over Manchester City. He’s proven himself as a leader within the team, earning praise from Steve McManaman, which underlines his importance to the Reds.

Considering Tottenham previously secured the signing of Micky van de Ven, Liverpool should be cautious about aiding a rival by selling one of their key players, especially to reinforce a positional competitor.

If Tottenham aims to strengthen their defense in January, they may need to explore other options beyond pursuing Joe Gomez from Liverpool.
