Andre Onana: Inter chief would not rule out a return to San Siro

Following a rough debut for Manchester United, Onana is under investigation.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper joined Inter on a free transfer and stayed for just a single year.

Early-season form is a problem for Manchester United.

Giuseppe Marotta, the chief executive of Inter, has declined to rule out Andre Onana’s potential return from Manchester United.

After making mistakes against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in the Champions League and against Brentford in a close 2-1 victory, Onana has been under a lot of strain since his rocky start to his Old Trafford career.

In a transaction that was just short of £50 million, the 27-year-old signed a five-year contract to become United’s long-term number one goalkeeper, replacing David de Gea. However, he hasn’t been the reliable presence in goal that fans had hoped for.

After only a year and a half, Onana was signed by cash-strapped Inter on a free transfer from Dutch powerhouse Ajax. The deal was a huge financial deal for the club, which used the money to purchase Yann Sommer and Benjamin Pavard from Bayern Munich.

Additionally, with Onana’s form under scrutiny, Inter CEO Marotta discussed a possible return to San Siro with Gazzetta dello Sport (via Daily Mail): “Anything can happen in football, but I can’t foretell the future. It was undoubtedly a wonderful chapter for both Onana and us.

“It was also a successful deal to sign him for free and sell for that money.”

Early in the season, Onana’s problems have taken center stage in the headlines, and his lackluster performances have added to United’s overall bad play. Erik ten Hag’s team has already dropped four Premier League games, and their two Champions League matches have yielded zero points. Against Brentford, they were saved by a brace in stoppage time from Scott McTominay.

The legendary United goalie Peter Schmeichel recently disclosed that he has been speaking with Onana and described the guidance he has offered on how to move past mistakes.

“I’m trying to speak to him about what it’s like to be at Manchester United, what you have to take,” the man from Denmark stated.

“You must immediately place whatever you’ve prepared in a box and set it aside. You make a mistake during a game; it might be something we notice or something else entirely, but you don’t analyze it or give it any thought until after the game, at night, or at some other time. You will commit the following error if you are not present for the next moment.

And now he’s got the crew all worked up. It’s not good, my god, that they won’t trust him even more now.”
