Since the Premier League’s announcement of Everton’s 10-point deduction, uncertainties persist about the potential penalties looming over Manchester City.

Following the breach of Premier League financial regulations, Everton immediately lost 10 points on Friday, sliding from 14th to 19th in the table. The league’s rules allow for a £105 million loss over three years, yet Everton’s accounts revealed a deficit of £124.5 million from 2021 to 2022. The club intends to review the decision, with a final verdict expected before the season’s end.

All attention now shifts to City and their ongoing Financial Fair Play (FFP) investigation. The 10-point penalty marks the Premier League’s most substantial deduction. City faced charges in February for multiple financial breaches spanning back to the 2009–10 season.

“As per Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms sending several alleged breaches by Manchester City Football Club to a Commission under Rule W.3.4,” stated the league. The violations were listed in detail, emphasizing the independence of the Commission. The independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel will select its members.

The Commission’s hearings will remain confidential as mandated by Premier League Rule W.82, with the final decision made public on the league’s website per Rule W.82.2. The league has refrained from further comments on this matter until further notice.

Despite possible severe penalties, there’s speculation that City might retain their Premier League titles. The suggestion that any punishments might not affect past seasons is circulating among those involved in the case. Although City has claimed seven league titles since 2009–10, stripping them doesn’t seem imminent according to Miguel Delaney of the Independent.

Delaney indicated that any penalties might not involve retroactive measures, such as revoking titles, an aspect described as ‘unprecedented.’ However, Martyn Ziegler from The Times believes the risk of a 30-point deduction or relegation from the Premier League could be a reality for both City and Chelsea, who are also under investigation for possible FFP violations.
