Given their own struggles with goal scoring, Chelsea star Joe Cole has questioned why his previous team let Romelu Lukaku to leave on loan this summer.
Mauricio Pochettino has not fared well in his first preseason as the manager of the Blues. Chelsea’s severe goal deficit in the first half of the season has been one of the most concerning parts of their current 11th-place standing in the Premier League.
With the exception of Manchester United, who have played one fewer game than them, the west Londoners have only scored 13 league goals all season, one less than every team above them. Chelsea faced Brentford at home in their most recent game, and after putting on a solid display in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal the previous week, there were high hopes.
In spite of this, Chelsea had trouble the rest of the way and lost 2-0 as goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Ethan Pinnock secured the victory. By the time the Bees scored their second goal, courtesy of Blues keeper Robert Sanchez going up for an offensive corner, Stamford Bridge was all but deserted.
Pochettino’s team had trouble turning possession into obvious scoring opportunities. It’s not like Chelsea is without possibilities; the team recently invested heavily in the signing of Nicolas Jackson, an attacker from Villarreal, and the manager of the Blues may also choose to explore Armando Broja. Conversely, Cole feels they had a capable replacement on file and chose to let him go voluntarily.
As the Belgian striker made evident in a fiery interview just months into his second stint at Chelsea, Lukaku’s £97 million move to Inter Milan in 2021 has not gone as planned, but he knows what the goal is. Unfortunately, he spent the entire season on loan at Roma.
Under Jose Mourinho, the former Manchester United and Inter striker has eight goals in ten games, but Cole is clearly of the opinion that he could have performed better for Chelsea. He said, “You hear all the buzzwords around the club, but we can’t score goals at the end of the day.”
Romelu Lukaku had shortcomings, but he was in the running. Why was he unable to score goals for Chelsea yet he was a success at Inter Milan and scored goals for Everton and West Brom in the UK? What exactly was wrong with him?
“He’s now leading Roma in goals.” So, in order to determine what is currently wrong with our club, we must go inward. Although the team is not well-rounded, there is currently a serious issue with the club.
Rumor has claimed that Chelsea is interested in signing Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen of Napoli before the January transfer window opens. It’s unclear if Pochettino wants to spend even more cash on a different offensive option.
