Diogo Jota was sent off in Liverpool’s contentious 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, and the Premier League’s Independent Key Match Incidents Panel has issued a major decision regarding the incident. With a 3-2 vote against issuing a booking, the report stated that “the majority deemed the decision as incorrect as they felt it did not meet the threshold for a yellow card.”
The panel, which was made up of three former players, coaches, Premier League, and PGMOL representatives, made it clear that they do not evaluate the first yellow card in cases where a player is dismissed for two bookable offenses. The one-match suspension for Jota is affected by this decision.
The two red cards and the goal by Luis Daz that was ruled offside by the referee infuriated Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. After PGMOL acknowledged that “standards fell short of expectations” in the Diaz incident, Klopp urged that the game be replayed.
