After being fined for a similar incident in a match against Newcastle, Liverpool and Netherlands star Virgil van Dijk found himself in another argument with a referee. Previously, Van Dijk was given a red card for a foul that he strongly contested, which resulted in a one-game suspension and a £100,000 fine from the FA.
Van Dijk gave up a penalty for handball in the opening three minutes of a Euro 2024 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland. Despite the fact that his actions indicated disapproval of the referee’s ruling, he avoided receiving a booking for the event.
Despite the early deficit, the Netherlands went on to triumph with to goals from former Manchester United loanee Wout Weghorst and his Liverpool teammate Cody Gakpo.
Van Dijk should be cautious when he resumes playing in the Premier League following his ban, in light of his most recent encounters with officials.
