Fabrizio Romano has provided a fresh update on Hugo Ekitike that’s likely to catch the attention of Liverpool fans.
Following Florian Plettenberg’s Sunday report (via X) that Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea are all eyeing the Eintracht Frankfurt forward, Romano revealed that the 22-year-old is still weighing his options and hasn’t leaned toward any club just yet.
Romano: Liverpool still active in Ekitike pursuit
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano noted that Darwin Nunez is ‘expected to leave’ Anfield this summer, despite calls from Stan Collymore for him to stay. He also added that FSG are already working behind the scenes to secure Ekitike’s signature.
Romano explained: “With Darwin’s likely departure, Ekitike is now a serious target for Liverpool. The club spoke with the player’s representatives back in May and have maintained regular communication with those close to him. Ekitike is definitely still on their radar.
“Even though other clubs are being mentioned, don’t rule out Liverpool — they’re still in the mix.”
Ekitike could be a more realistic option than Isak
Plettenberg’s claim that Man United have now contacted Ekitike’s camp and shown concrete interest makes it all the more important that Liverpool made early moves and have remained consistent in their pursuit.
Should Nunez leave this summer, Liverpool would be wise to secure a new striker before the window closes in August. Diogo Jota is talented but has struggled with injuries over his time at the club.
While journalist Lewis Steele believes Ekitike doesn’t quite match the quality of Alexander Isak, the Frankfurt striker is likely to be a more budget-friendly option — a crucial factor as Liverpool have already committed £116m to signing Florian Wirtz.
Liverpool’s continued contact with Ekitike’s team signals that FSG may be preparing for Nunez’s departure and want to be ready to swoop for the French under-21 talent if a spot opens up in the forward line.
