Manchester United have formally secured the signing of a striker viewed as a modest improvement over Liam Delap.

Manchester United are reportedly considering a surprising move to bring Aleksandar Mitrović back to the Premier League as they continue their hunt for a dependable and experienced striker.

According to talkSPORT, the Serbian forward has come onto United’s radar after they lost out on their previous target, Liam Delap, who chose to join Chelsea instead.

With the club’s young attacking lineup struggling to produce consistent goals, manager Rúben Amorim is said to be pushing for a seasoned striker who can stabilize the offense and mentor the club’s younger forwards.

Currently at Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, Mitrović has been in outstanding form since his 2023 move from Fulham, scoring an impressive 68 goals in 79 games.

Despite his success, Al Hilal are reportedly willing to offload some of their star foreign players, including Mitrović, to comply with the league’s foreign player restrictions, making him a feasible option for United as they rebuild.

At 30, Mitrović may not be a long-term solution, but his physicality, Premier League experience, and natural goal-scoring ability make him an ideal short-term fix.

During his time at Fulham, he was known for his physical dominance, effective hold-up play, and clinical finishing — qualities that United currently lack in attack.

The club’s main forwards, Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee, have shown promise but are still adapting to the Premier League’s demands.

Mitrović could provide valuable mentorship and act as a reliable backup, easing pressure on the younger players while offering a different attacking option when required.

His presence would give United a “Plan B” — especially useful in physical battles or matches requiring a more direct style of play — which could be vital in their push to return to the top of the league.

Financially, Mitrović commands a high wage, reportedly earning around £405,000 per week in Saudi Arabia.

However, a return to England may appeal to him competitively, especially if United present a chance to prove himself again at the highest level.

If the club can negotiate a more manageable salary package, this signing could provide good value.

While this move may not have the glamour of a headline-grabbing transfer, it could be a smart squad-building decision.

A player of Mitrović’s quality, joining on a short-term basis to guide younger players and add goal-scoring depth, would address a pressing need.

Much like Zlatan Ibrahimović’s influential role during his time at Old Trafford, Mitrović could offer immediate impact and leadership, rather than long-term development.

If Manchester United finalize deals for Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Mitrović, their attacking options will be significantly enhanced.

With a blend of versatility (Cunha), creativity (Mbeumo), and physical power (Mitrović), Amorim would have a more well-rounded and balanced forward line heading into the new season.
