Liverpool legend John Aldridge has sparked debate by suggesting that a player he greatly admires should leave Anfield in search of more opportunities.

Aldridge has specifically urged goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to consider a move away from Liverpool, as he previewed the upcoming Carabao Cup final.

Speaking to Vegastars, Aldridge praised Kelleher’s talent, calling him “brilliant” but acknowledging his misfortune in being second choice behind Alisson, widely regarded as the world’s best goalkeeper.

Despite proving his quality whenever given the chance, Kelleher has struggled for regular game time.

The former Reds striker believes it would be wise for the Republic of Ireland international to seek a move to a club where he can be a first-choice goalkeeper.

Aldridge even mentioned Tottenham as a potential destination and jokingly suggested Manchester United, though he quickly dismissed that as a realistic option.

Discussing Kelleher’s future, Aldridge said: “He’s a top-class keeper. In both League Cup finals he played, he was arguably Man of the Match. Every time he has stepped up for Liverpool, he’s been outstanding.”

He continued: “It’s tough for him because Liverpool has the best goalkeeper in the world. As much as I’d love him to stay, he deserves to be playing week in, week out.”

Aldridge added that he would prefer to see Kelleher move abroad, naming Italy, Spain, and Germany as potential destinations.

However, he also emphasized that the 26-year-old has the ability to start for any top Premier League club in need of a quality goalkeeper.
