Martin Zubimendi has reignited speculation about Liverpool’s interest in signing him, despite rejecting a move to Anfield this past summer in favor of remaining at Real Sociedad.
The Spanish midfielder opted to stay in picturesque San Sebastián, resisting the allure of the Merseyside club even during Liverpool’s pressing need for a defensive midfielder at the time.
The prolonged transfer saga was a disappointment for Liverpool’s recruitment team, particularly as they scrambled to address a critical gap in the squad.
However, Ryan Gravenberch’s arrival and subsequent impressive performances have eased the pressure, leaving manager Arne Slot with a welcome dilemma over squad rotation.
Zubimendi Hints at Future Liverpool Move
In a recent interview with *El Diario Vasco*, Zubimendi reflected on his decision to stay at Sociedad, suggesting he remains open to a move in the future.
“I went on vacation, and the offer caught me by surprise,” the Spanish international shared. “It wasn’t something I had planned. I weighed the pros and cons and decided that staying was the best option for me at the time.”
He dismissed the notion of “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunities, adding, “If you’re good and want to achieve something, it will come to you. There’s no need to rush.”
While affirming his commitment to Sociedad, Zubimendi emphasized his focus on personal growth and his role within the club.
“I looked at my development, the club’s project, and decided this season was crucial for me,” he said. “It wasn’t a difficult decision—staying was what I felt was best for me.”
Departure Likely in the Future?
Reliable journalist David Ornstein of *The Athletic* reported that Zubimendi may be warming to the idea of leaving Real Sociedad next summer.
“Multiple well-placed sources believe Martin Zubimendi is now coming to terms with the idea of departing Real Sociedad – and anticipate that happening next summer,” Ornstein wrote.
However, he noted there’s still uncertainty, as Zubimendi has previously opted to stay after similar speculation.
This time, though, the midfielder appears to be leaning toward a move, with time for both him and Sociedad to plan a smooth transition.
Liverpool’s Interest Moving Forward
Should Zubimendi agree to a transfer in 2025, it would further bolster Liverpool’s midfield depth, assuming their interest remains strong.
With the likes of Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, and Dominik Szoboszlai already in place, the addition of Zubimendi could elevate Liverpool’s midfield to an elite level.
For now, Liverpool fans will wait to see how the situation develops, as the prospect of Zubimendi wearing the red shirt remains an enticing possibility.
