Real Madrid find themselves in a precarious position in the Champions League after suffering their third defeat in five league-phase matches. Carlo Ancelotti’s side traveled to Anfield, where they were thoroughly outplayed and fell to a 2-0 loss against Liverpool.

The match initially appeared evenly balanced, with both teams struggling to create clear chances during a tightly contested first half. Despite moments of brilliance, neither side managed to break the deadlock before halftime.

The momentum shifted dramatically after the break. Just seven minutes into the second half, Liverpool capitalized on a well-executed attacking play, with Alexis Mac Allister finishing clinically to give the home side the lead, igniting celebrations among the Anfield crowd.

The game then took another twist as both teams were awarded penalties in quick succession before the 70th minute.

Andy Robertson’s foul on Lucas Vazquez handed Real Madrid a chance to equalize, but Kylian Mbappe’s penalty was denied by Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who made a decisive save.

Soon after, Liverpool had their own opportunity to extend the lead from the spot following a defensive error by Madrid. However, Mohamed Salah uncharacteristically missed, dragging his effort wide and giving the visitors a lifeline.

Liverpool continued to press and were rewarded in the 77th minute when Cody Gakpo doubled their lead with a well-taken goal. This strike effectively secured the victory, leaving Real Madrid with little time to respond.

This defeat has serious implications for Madrid’s Champions League campaign. Ancelotti’s team now sits precariously in 24th place—the final playoff spot—with three matchdays remaining.

Their qualification for the next stage is far from guaranteed, and improved performances will be essential to avoid an early exit.

The result at Anfield underscores Real Madrid’s struggles this season. Despite their storied history in European football, the team has been unable to demonstrate the dominance they are known for.

With time running out, Ancelotti and his squad face an uphill battle to revive their Champions League hopes.
