Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is reportedly on the verge of being dismissed from Al Ettifaq after a series of poor performances and admitting to prioritizing watching his former club over training sessions.
At 44, Gerrard’s managerial reputation had already suffered following his troubled tenure at Aston Villa.
Despite his struggles there, Harry Redknapp still suggested him as a potential candidate for the England managerial role, though Thomas Tuchel ultimately secured the position.
It’s clear Gerrard has encountered similar challenges in the Saudi Pro League—ranked 72nd globally (TeamForm)—as he did in England’s top flight.
Last season, Al Ettifaq placed sixth, with just half the points of champions Al Hilal, per TNT Sports. This season, Gerrard’s team has won three of eight games, standing 10th with 11 points, trailing Al Hilal by 13 points, and without a win in five matches.
According to The Sun, this drastic slump has placed Gerrard on the edge of losing his position, and his admission to RedmenTV about structuring training around Liverpool games seems to be the final straw for club officials.
Losing his £15.2 million yearly contract could also cost Gerrard any remaining credibility as a capable football manager.
