Liverpool have received a significant boost in their pursuit of a new midfielder. Despite agreeing on a deal with Real Sociedad to sign Martin Zubimendi last summer, the move fell through as the Spaniard chose to remain at his boyhood club.
Although Liverpool are expected to revisit the deal in the January transfer window, with Manchester City also interested in replacing Rodri, there are no guarantees that Zubimendi will decide to join Anfield.
As a result, manager Arne Slot has had to explore other options, with one of his top targets being Real Madrid and France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
Despite starting all seven of Real Madrid’s opening La Liga matches, Tchouameni’s performance levels have not fully met expectations since his move from Monaco in 2022. Consequently, Carlo Ancelotti is open to selling the 24-year-old if the right offer comes along.
Reports from Fichajes suggest Liverpool are the most interested club and are prepared to offer £66 million (€80 million) for Tchouameni.
While Ryan Gravenberch is having an impressive season in Slot’s midfield, the Liverpool boss understands that another high-profile signing will be needed to maintain the team’s smooth transition from the Jurgen Klopp era.
Tchouameni, despite not yet reaching his full potential at Real Madrid, is only 24 years old and has room for growth. Liverpool has a strong track record of turning good players into great ones, making Tchouameni a promising target.
