Liverpool youngster Calum Scanlon is expected to be out for approximately three months due to injury and has returned to the Premier League club from his loan at Millwall.
According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, the 19-year-old is dealing with a stress fracture in his back, which will keep him sidelined for at least three months. Liverpool recalled Scanlon to assess his condition and manage his treatment.
This is a major setback for Scanlon, whose loan spell at Millwall has been interrupted after joining the Championship side in the summer.
The left-back saw limited action in the early part of the 2024/25 season, playing just 11 minutes in Millwall’s 1-0 loss to Luton Town on 14 September.
Gaining first-team experience is crucial for Scanlon’s development, and the Liverpool youngster will be eager to recover from his injury and return to London as he works to climb the ranks at the Merseyside club.

It’s still too early to determine if Scanlon will succeed at Liverpool, but the young player likely has his sights set on the left-back position at Anfield, especially with Andy Robertson’s contract expiring in 2026.
The 19-year-old has been with Liverpool since joining their youth academy in 2020 and trained extensively with Jurgen Klopp’s squad last season, as the manager saw potential in him.
Klopp also gave Scanlon his debut in Liverpool’s 5–1 victory over Toulouse in the UEFA Europa League in October, one of two appearances the defender has made for the club. He will be hoping for many more in the future.
