Liverpool defender Calum Scanlon has returned to the club for further evaluation and treatment after sustaining an injury while on loan at Millwall.
According to club reporter James Pearce (The Athletic), who shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), the 19-year-old fullback is believed to have suffered a stress fracture in his back, which is expected to sideline him for about three months.
Earlier today, head coach Arne Slot indicated that Alisson Becker is likely to be available for Liverpool’s upcoming Premier League match against Wolves.
The injury is a major setback for Calum Scanlon.
The young fullback had only just begun his Championship loan, making a brief 11-minute appearance in Millwall’s 1-0 loss to Luton Town in mid-September.
Scanlon had joined Millwall on a season-long loan, but his departure was confirmed by his manager on Wednesday, with no clear timeline for his return from injury.
“We’re very disappointed to lose him as he offered something different to what we have, being a very attack-minded fullback,” said Millwall manager Neil Harris, quoted by The Lancashire Post.
Who is Calum Scanlon?
Scanlon first joined Liverpool from Birmingham City in 2020 at the age of 15, in a deal reportedly worth around £500,000.
He signed his first professional contract in 2022 and has since made two senior appearances for Liverpool during the 2023/24 season in the Europa League (against Union SG and Toulouse).
Scanlon has impressed the club’s staff with his potential, and at just 19, he should have plenty of time to recover from this setback and continue his development.
He might even return to Millwall to complete his loan spell and gain valuable first-team experience, depending on his recovery progress in three months.
