After Katie Zelem’s departure this summer, Manchester United has appointed Maya Le Tissier as the new captain for the 2024/25 season.
Le Tissier, who joined the team from Brighton & Hove Albion two years ago, quickly established herself as a key part of United’s defense.
She expressed her pride, saying, “It’s an honor to be named captain of this great club, and I will wear the armband with pride to help drive this team to success on and off the pitch.”
Zelem had held the captaincy since 2019, leading the team to an FA Cup victory in May before leaving at the end of her contract in June. She later signed with Angel City in the NWSL.
Le Tissier has enjoyed a strong partnership with Millie Turner and played a crucial role in helping United achieve a WSL record of 14 clean sheets in the 2022–23 season, where the team finished second.
Since Euro 2022, Le Tissier has made four international appearances and received her first senior England call-up.
Although she traveled with the team to Australia, she had limited involvement and was placed on standby for the 2023 World Cup.
Her international progress has been hindered by Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman’s decision to see her as a full-back rather than the center-back role she played at Brighton.
Le Tissier, along with Ella Toone, who was named the new vice-captain, was voted United’s joint Players’ Player of the Year for the 2023/24 season.
While Hayley Ladd usually wore the armband when Zelem was unavailable, no official deputy was previously named.
Le Tissier signed a new contract in April, keeping her at the club until 2028, while Toone signed a long-term deal in 2022, which runs until the end of next season.
Toone is also United’s all-time leading scorer and appearance maker, with 53 goals in 164 appearances.
